What to do after a car accident: a calm checklist

The steps to take at the scene and in the days after, in order.

At the scene

  • Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt.
  • Move to safety if the cars can be moved and it is legal to do so. Turn on hazard lights.
  • Call the police when required by your state, or when there are injuries or significant damage. Ask for the report number.
  • Exchange information: names, phone numbers, insurance companies and policy numbers, license plates and vehicle descriptions.
  • Take photos of all vehicles, the scene, road conditions and any visible injuries.
  • Find witnesses and get their contact details.
Don't argue about fault at the scene. Stick to facts with the other driver and police.

In the next day or two

  • Report the claim to your insurer promptly. Most policies require timely notice.
  • See a doctor even for minor pain; some injuries show up later.
  • Keep records of medical visits, towing, rental costs and time off work.

Repairs and rentals

You can usually choose your repair shop, though your insurer may suggest one in its network. Rental coverage applies only if you have rental reimbursement or the other driver's insurer accepts liability.
