Moving? How it changes your car insurance

A new address can raise or lower your rate. What to update and when.

Your garaging address is a core rating factor. Moving even a few miles can change your premium, and moving to a new state means a new policy under that state's rules.

Moving within your state

Tell your insurer your new address as soon as you move. Rates can change based on local claims, traffic and theft patterns. It is also a natural moment to compare quotes.

Moving to a new state

  • States set different minimum coverages. Some are no-fault and require personal injury protection.
  • You will usually need to register the car and get a new license in the new state, often within 30 to 90 days.
  • Your current insurer may not write policies in your new state, so you may need a new company.
  • Keep coverage continuous. Start the new policy before cancelling the old one.

Don't forget

Update your address with your lender, update garaging for every vehicle and check whether your new parking situation (garage, driveway or street) changes your rate.

Ask your new state's motor vehicle agency for its insurance requirements before you buy a policy there.
